Electric cars for kids are a great way to keep little ones happy, especially over the holiday season. Do you want to buy and electric car for your child or you are considering it, but not sure what they are about? Well here are some of the typical features that should help you decide.
Power:
Kids electric cars are typically powered by either a 12 or 6 volt battery. So what are the differences between the two and which one should you but? Well 12 volt vehicles offer more power and are usually the larger ride on cars such as the The Fisher Price Jeep Wrangler. They will typically have 2.5mph reverse speed and 2 forward speeds – 2.5 mph and 5mph. A stick shift is used to change between these modes. The 6 volt ride on toys are smaller and are for the youngest of drivers. They tend to have one gentle forward speed and can be used indoors and outside on flat surfaces like sidewalks and low grass. There are some 24 volt models available which offer a lot of power and can handle more extreme terrains.
Safety features:
All kids battery cars have common safety features built into them. They all have a safety cut out feature whereby if it becomes overloaded, a thermal fuse cuts the power to prevent engine burnout. The electric ride on will start again after 30 seconds or so. The safety feature kicks in when the vehicle struggles to cope with the terrain, or the load is too heavy. When you 1st use any electric ride on car, you should ensure that you charge the battery following the manufacturers recommended charging time which is typically at least 18 hours. If you skimp on this, the car will faill to provide full power and you can in fact damage the battery byt not charging it this way.
The braking system in electric ride on cars is unlike a conventional car because to stop them, you release the foot pedal. Fisher Price models have a patented “Power Lock” braking system which is basically the same thing. Furthermore, many have speed limit locks on them. The lock is on by default at 2.5mph which is the speed your child should 1st ride at to get used to steering etc. When they are more adept, you can deactivate the limiter for a max speed of 5mph. The speed limiter is usually a lever that is locked or screwed into place.
Electic kids car testing:
Just like a real car, electric toy cars have to undergo extensive safety test procedures and one of the biggest exponents of this process are Fisher Price. They have been making ride on cars for well over 30 years and fully test all their electric ride on cars both in the Fisher-Price onsite Play Lab and through the Fisher-Price in-home test program. All kids electric cars will need to be assembled by an adult, but you should not let that put you off because the instructions are always fairly straightforward. You will only need basic tools such as Philips and slotted screwdrivers. A provided assembly tool is used to power any lock nuts and it will take you about an hour to build even with the bigger ride on cars.
You will find that many kids electric cars have space for two riders especially the 12 volt models so if you have more than one child the other one is likely to want to have a go too. So get one of these if you can.
